The Ecogarden: a Community of Plants and Wildlife
The beginnings of the Ecogarden: first summer (2003).
Work in progress. Plant communities form the
foundation of habitat for all wildlife.
The Famous Traveler. Some of the Monarchs
we see in our Ecogarden in late summer
migrate to Mexico in the fall, covering a
distance of over 4500 km.
Our Ecogarden in the Context
Situated between the Ottawa River and the
Gatineau Park, at the junction of the Canadian
Shield and the St. Laurence Lowlands, bordering
on the Breckenridge Creek Nature Preserve, our
Ecogarden is strategically positioned to serve as
an observation point for an extremely diverse
and fascinating ecosystem. When we started
looking for a house in 2002, our main criteria for
a suitable property were the following features:
1) forest, 2) meadow, 3) water, 4) hills. This
property seemed to have it all: close to the
Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills, it also had a
bonus, - a nearby swamp with Chorus frogs.
